open call dutch design week 2026
“stories through design”
Application deadline : rolling up to Jul 20th
full open call details
In a world full of things, more waste, capitalistic exploitation and colonial injustices, why do we design, for whom do we design and how do we continue to design, make, create? Does your work try to answer these questions? Then we warmly invite you to a collective exhibition at Dutch Design Week titled “stories through design”.
Objects surround us wherever we go, in almost any space they sit on our shelves, hang above our heads, rest on our floors, fill the gaps between our hands and the world. Yet, somewhere between the industrial revolution and late stage capitalism, the reason for having these objects, the emotional value it holds and the connection with a maker it can afford is quietly erased in the name of efficiency, scale and profit. The objects we live with are embodied manifestations of labour, land, knowledge accumulated across generations, political decisions about whose creativity counts and whose does not. When we stop asking where something comes from, who made it and how it was produced, we lose accountability and become complicit in the system.
To challenge common design and production paradigms, “stories through design” brings together creatives who refuse to separate making from meaning and whose practice begins with a shared refusal - to design without asking why. The creators in this exhibition do not begin with form or material, but rather a realisation that behind every resource- whether human or material- is a set of hard working hands, hard earned land and generational knowledge. This exhibition is ultimately about listening, observing and creating space for critical, inquisitive and challenging creative works that recognize that every object carries the weight of its own becoming, and embrace this weight in complex and creative ways.
