agra, a city steeped in mughal architecture and artisanal legacy, is also home to a variety of crafts and many bustling bazaars. among one of the busiest bazaars in agra, the red ceramic “trees” were an instant curiosity to our eyes. of unknown origins and no connection to the local hot, dry, desert landscape, the red ceramic “trees” made us wonder why were these were being sold and who made them?
the cactus 1 is an active recontextualisation between a found object and the surrounding location. cactus 1 imagines new meaning for these objects, drawing a poetic connection between agra’s arid expanse of the nearby thar desert and forging a connection to the red trees that we found in the bazaar.
